The Tools Of Trade

Just as in any trade, a craftsmen is only as good as his skill set and the tools he uses. The carpenter needs his hammer and drill, the mechanic needs his wrenches and sockets, and the painter needs his brushes and tape. Im gonna go through a little bit of tools we apply in our trade as painters. It all starts with painters tape. There is many different good tapes on the market right now but we are fan favorites of using Frog tape. There has been a long debate between which is better FrogTape or Blue Tape. Both are very good tape, but we tend to lean more towards FrogTape. The tape is only as good as the painter applying them though. When it comes to paint brushes we have a plethora of different brushes in our arsenal. They all have their own function and own specific use for each job. There are two main categories for bristles on paint brushes. Synthetic brushes - which are made up of a of a polyester and latex mix. They work very well with oil based paint types compared to natural brushed which absorb too much water and make them very difficult to apply the smooth and streak free. Nature brushes are the other category of brushes. They are made from animal hair mostly that comes off of wide variety of animals like: horses, squirrels, dears, and wild hogs. Brushes also come in different sizes. They averagely range for sizes of 3/4" to 6". If you are painting trim or very tight corners you want to go with a smaller brush. For trim you probably want to go in the 2" to 3" range. Window seals which typically are smaller then your baseboards you want to go from the 1" range to 2" range tops! If you are painting a little bit larger area such as doors or kitchen cabinets you can to from the 3"-4" range. So now you know the difference between synthetic vs natural brushes, and the size difference, ill go ahead and let you know what specific brushes we use for different parts of each job. When it comes to walls our go to brush in the Purdy Xl medium stiff brush. It has great coverage and and has a very smooth result for patching up bigger areas of the wall. Over all an amazing brush for larger areas. If you getting into more intricate detailed work we like to us the Purdy XL elite stiff brush. It is a very tight fitting brush that is perfect for those hard to get areas, and for more fine work. If you have to cut into tight edges we are big fans of using the Wooster two inch shortcut angle sash brush. It is an excellent brush for cutting into those tight angles and will save you a lot of time and stress. For most oil based paints we tend to go with the Purdy black bristle series medium stiff. It does a very good job of keeping even strokes while using any oil based paint.
